Una sera di 13 anni fa Lena Beck sta tornando a casa da una festa, quando scompare misteriosamente. I genitori, la polizia ed i giornali della stampa locale cercano di far luce su quanto accaduto, ma della giovane nessuna traccia.
In una capanna isolata nel bosco la vita di Lena e quella dei suoi due bambini è regolata da orari ben precisi, stabiliti dal rapitore. I pasti, i momenti di studio e persino l’andare in bagno sono tutti pianificati con una certa meticolosità e tutti devono rispettarli.
Un giorno Lena riesce a fuggire da quest’incubo, ma il rapitore continuerà a tormentarla per cercare di riprendersi ciò che gli appartiene. La polizia e i genitori di Lena cercano disperatamente di far luce sull’intera vicenda che non sembra essere troppo chiara. Il primo quesito da risolvere è se questa giovane donna sia effettivamente Lena Beck.
La storia è narrata da più punti di vista ed è piena di flashback, ma il tutto risulta scorrevole alla lettura. Un libro che si fa divorare, anche perché ogni capitolo finisce con un qualche elemento di sorpresa per cui è impossibile non continuare a leggere. Le domande si accavallano nella mente del lettore che deve scoprire come andrà a finire.
